Guwahati, May 13 (IANS) Celebrations began in the Congress camp Friday with trends indicating a massive win for the party for the third straight term. The opposition was literally trounced.
According to latest trends, the Congress is leading in 70 of the 126 seats while the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is ahead in just eight seats, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in six.
Surprisingly, the Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) has emerged as the second formidable opposition leading in 13 seats. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), a Congress ally, is leading in 14 seats.
“The trends are on expected lines. As I said earlier, we are forming the next government comfortably. People of Assam voted us based on our performance in the past 10 years,” Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told IANS.
The AGP and BJP accepted defeat. “We must respect the mandate of the people,” a senior AGP leader said.
