Congress backs Manmohan Singh as PM candidateOctober 1st, 2008 - 8:48 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS) The Congress Thursday backed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as its prime ministerial candidate in the next Lok Sabha elections, but he felt it was too early to talk about it.“There is no change in the party’s stand as was expressed by party president Sonia Gandhi on Aug 15. What she has said she has said … that is the party line,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told reporters here.
Gandhi Aug 5 expressed confidence that Singh would unfurl the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort next year too.
After hoisting the flag at the Congress headquarters, Gandhi was asked by reporters if Manmohan Singh would unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort next year too, that is if he would continue to be prime minister after the next elections. She responded: “why not? Certainly.”
On his way back from a 10-day visit to the US and France, Manmohan Singh Wednesday told reporters: “It’s too early to talk about the potential prime ministerial candidate for the Congress as there are several leaders who are equally qualified or better qualified than me.”
