Raipur, May 1 (IANS) Dozens of Chhattisgarh’s opposition Congress party workers were arrested here Thursday when they defied police warnings and insisted on staging a protest at the chief minister’s official residence. The opposition workers, led by party’s senior leader and legislator Satyanarayan Sharma, took out a rally in Raipur and reached close to the residence of Chief Minister Raman Singh to stage a protest, but the police arrested them.

The protest march was linked to a recent decision of the district collector to not to allow the Congress-dominated Birgaon municipal council in Raipur district to implement its decision to provide rice at Rs.2 per kilogram to about 1,200 below poverty line (BPL) card holders.
