Chennai, Feb 4 (IANS) The Congress does not want the PMK in the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, one of five states going to the polls this year, a DMK source said Friday. The DMK leader told IANS that the Congress had expressed reservations about the PMK to DMK chief and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Karunanidhi told the party’s all powerful General Council Thursday that the Congress high command was not in favour of having the PMK as an ally.
A senior DMK leader said: “Our president said the Congress is not in favour of having the PMK in the alliance. He did not tell the reason for that.”
Karunanidhi recently met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and finalised the electoral alliance.
Karunanidhi had declared Jan 30 that the DMK front will comprise of smaller parties including the PMK and Muslim League besides the Congress.
The same day, PMK founder S. Ramadoss said his party had not yet finalised who it would sail with in the elections.
Karunanidhi also made a U-turn, saying the question of PMK being a part of the DMK-led alliance did not arise now.
Tamil Nadu Congress chief K.V. Thankabalau told IANS that the Congress and DMK presidents had discussed the issue.
“I am not aware of the details,” he said.
Leaders of the PMK, which fought the last assembly election as an ally of the AIADMK, were not available for comments.
