Moscow, Dec 6 (IANS) The closing ceremony of the “Year of India in Russia” that was to be attended by visiting India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur Monday evening in Moscow has been cancelled in the wake of a fire in a jampacked Russian nightclub that killed 110 people.
Russia is observing a mourning day Monday and the organisers had to cancel the gala event, which would have seen Indian sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan performing in the new hall of the historic Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
The tragedy occurred during a party to celebrate the Lame Horse club’s eighth anniversary in the Perm city nightclub when an indoor fireworks display started a fire that consumed most of the 500 square metre venue.
