- Washington, June 20 (DPA) US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton underwent successful surgery on her elbow Friday and will be resting at home with family for the weekend before returning to her duties, the State Department said.
Clinton fell Wednesday afternoon while walking to her car in the State Department’s basement, fracturing her right elbow. The two-hour surgery was performed early Friday morning at nearby George Washington University Hospital, her chief of staff Cheryl Mills said in a statement.
Clinton’s doctors “have advised her that they expect her to make a full recovery without lasting damage to her arm,” Mills said. “After the surgery she returned to her home in Washington where she will remain with her family through the weekend.”
Clinton was due to travel to Trieste, Italy next week to meet with the Group of Eight (G8) foreign ministers and attend a conference on Afghanistan. The State Department said decisions about her schedule would be made in the coming days.
