Clashes over desecration of Ambedkar statues
January 23rd, 2012 - 9:05 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, Jan 23 (IANS) Two groups clashed in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh Monday after unidentified people desecrated three statues of B.R. Ambedkar, police said.
Police banned the assembly of five or more people in Amlapuram town as tension mounted after the statues were vandalised.
A Dalit group protesting against the incident clashed with another group in Amlapuram. Police baton charged the two groups pelting stones on each other.
The trouble began after people noticed the damaged statues Monday. The incident took place in three villages in Amlapuram block.
Protesters in Amlapuram town blocked the roads, demanding action against those who damaged the statues.
Additional police forces were rushed to the area to maintain law and order.
Superintendent of police and other officers reached the town from district headquarter to supervise the security arrangements.
State Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy directed the police to bring the guilty to book.
In Hyderabad, at least two ministers and other leaders of ruling Congress party met Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and urged him to order a high-level probe.
Minister for Major Industries Geeta Reddy told reporters that they urged the chief minister to take stern action against the guilty.
