Christine O’Donnell Questions Separation of Church and State
October 20th, 2010 - 2:49 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonOct 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The GOP Senate nominee for Delaware, Christine O’Donnell is was questioned on Tuesday as to whether or not the Constitution of the United States provides for the “separation of church and state” during a radio debate with her Democratic opponent, Chris Coons on WDEL radio.
Coons made his argument that the local school should teach science and not religion. O’Donnell piped in and asked, “Where in the Constitution is the separation of church and state? The crowd at Widener Law School was shocked at the question, and shouts of “Whoa!” along with laughter was heard.
Coons pointed out quickly that the First Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” But O’Donnellthen asked, “You’re telling me the First Amendment does?”
But O’Donnell was able to catch her opponent completely off guard when she came back at him to ask if he could identify the five freedoms which are guaranteed in the First Amendment. The only one which he was able to quote was the separation of church and state, leaving out the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, to right to assemble and right to petition.
