Hyderabad, Dec 18 (IANS) Actor-turned-politician K. Chiranjeevi Friday reached the temple town of Tirupati to participate in the movement against the division of Andhra Pradesh.
A day after changing his stand on separate Telangana state and submitting his resignation to the assembly speaker, the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief reached Tirupati, which is also his assembly constituency.
PRP leaders and activists welcomed Chiranjeevi, who will be visiting various towns and villages in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra to back the ongoing agitation against the proposed separate statehood to Telangana region.
Chiranjeevi had Thursday announced that he had decided to fight for a ‘united Andhra’ in accordance with the wishes of the majority of the people.
However, his decision evoked sharp reaction from his party leaders in Telangana. The two PRP legislators from the region have decided to quit while presidents of several district units of the party have resigned.
Fifteen of PRP’s 18 members of the assembly have submitted their resignations to the assembly speaker since Dec 9 when the central government agreed to initiate the process for the formation of a Telangana state.
Meanwhile, the protests against Chiranjeevi continued for the second day in Telangana, which comprises 10 districts including Hyderabad.
PRP activists along with Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) workers have stopped screening of films of Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja and nephew Allu Arjun at several theatres.
The protestors have also stopped screening of “Saleem” a film starring Manchu Vishnu, son of veteran actor-producer Mohan Babu, who has also backed the ‘united Andhra’ movement.
