Chinchilla likely to become Costa Rica’s first female president, closest contender concedes
February 8th, 2010 - 1:45 pm ICT by BNO NewsSAN JOSE, COSTA RICA (BNO NEWS) — Costa Rica’s centrist Laura Chinchilla of the ruling National Liberation Party was ahead in the presidential election, the country’s electoral tribunal said on Sunday.
Chinchilla had 48 percent of the vote with 20 percent of ballots counted, according to official results.
Closest contender, Citizens Action Party candidate Otton Solis conceded the race and said that Chinchilla will be Costa Rica’s first female president. If Chinchilla surpassed the 40 percent figure, she would avoid an April runoff.
Chinchilla, 50, has promised to continue President Oscar Arias business-friendly policies.
