China recognises Libya’s NTC as ruling authority
September 12th, 2011 - 10:25 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Sep 12 (IANS) China Monday officially recognised Libya’s rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) as the ruling authority and representative of the Libyan people.
“China respects the choice of the Libyan people and attaches great importance to the status and the role of the NTC, and has kept in close contact with it,” Xinhua quoted foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu as saying in a statement.
He said China will work with the NTC “to realise a steady and smooth transition and development of bilateral ties”.
China hopes that all treaties and agreements inked previously with the Muammar Gaddafi regime could remain effective and be implemented seriously, he said.
After the ouster of Gaddafi following months of a NATO-led operation, the NTC has been recognised as the legitimate power in Libya by some 60 countries.
At an international conference on Libya recently held in Paris, world leaders agreed to release $15 billion in frozen Libyan assets for the country’s interim authorities to help Libya return to normal life after months of violence.
