P. Chidambaram Sukna (Darjeeling), July 18 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram Monday warned the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) not to be partial towards Gorkhas.

The newly formed Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) will have to look after people from every caste and religion, he said.

“What is India if we do not see the infinite variety of India? The area that comes under GTA is also a plural society. There will be many races here, many religious, many languages,” Chidambaram said here.

A tripartite agreement was signed Monday between the GJM and the West Bengal and central governments to set up the GTA.

At the core of the pact is the formation of a new autonomous, elected GTA, a hill council armed with more powers than its predecessor, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council.

“The new administration must respect the plurality of this region as we respect the plurality of India,” said Chidambaram.

The GJM has in the last three years warned people to wear only the traditional Gorkha dress in the hills.

GJM activists have attacked civilians from the plains, saying Gorkhaland belongs to Gorkhas.

Assuring the GTA of all help, Chidambaram said the central government will maintain a careful watch on the autonomous body.

“You will get all help from the West Bengal and central governments… You have our blessings and good wishes.”
