Chidambaram backing ‘delinquent’ cops, says BJP

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday hit out at Home Minister P. Chidambaram for his statement hinting at intervention in the case of two senior Gujarat Police officials facing disciplinary action, and alleged that the central government was “supporting delinquent officers”.
“Instead of strengthening effective policing, the home minister is supporting those who are spreading disaffection,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman told reporters here.
She said the move could impact the federal structure of the country.
Sitharaman’s reaction came in the wake of a statement by Chidambaram here Friday that the central government had the right to “look into” the cases of two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, who are facing disciplinary action from the Narendra Modi-headed government.
The state government recently suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sanjiv Bhatt, who had filed a public interest litigation in the apex court court against Modi over the post-Godhra riots in 2002.
Rahul Sharma, another DIG, was issued a show cause notice for providing some telephone call records against Modi to the special investigation team (SIT) probing the riots of 2002.
