Shillong, July 7 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday assured Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma all necessary assistance to tackle militancy in the state.
“We have analysed and assessed the security situation in the state with the home minister and he has assured us central assistance in combating militancy,” Sangma told IANS by telephone from New Delhi.
In the meeting attended by home ministry officials, Sangma said, he sought the support of the central government to assist the combing operations against militancy in the state.
Security forces have cracked down on the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in western Meghalaya.
Meghalaya, especially the Garo Hill, the most backward region, is used as a safe haven by various northeast-based militant groups.
The GNLA, one of five Garo rebel groups fighting for a ’sovereign Garoland’ in the western area of Meghalaya, is headed by police officer-turned-rogue Champion R. Sangma.
