Chhattisgarh Congress veterans revive rivalry
December 6th, 2009 - 4:50 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, Dec 6 (IANS) Two Chhattisgarh Congress veterans - former chief minister Ajit Jogi and nine-time MP V.C. Shukla - have revived their rivalry ahead of this month’s polls to civic bodies.
Party insiders say that the two leaders have opposed each other at crucial party meets in the past one week over selection of party candidates for nagar nigam, nagar palika and nagar panchayat elections, voting for which will be held Dec 21 and Dec 23.
“Jogi and Shukla, who are known rivals, are pushing hard to ensure more party tickets for their supporters for the civic bodies polls,” a senior state level party leader told IANS.
The state election commission said that polling for 14 nagar palika and 87 nagar panchayats will be held Dec 21, while voting for the remaining 12 nagar palika and 32 nagar panchayat seats and all the nine nagar nigams will be held Dec 23. The votes will be counted Dec 27.
The polling time in Maoist-insurgency hit Bastar region will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., while for other areas it will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The election will be held through ballot papers, not electronic voting machines.
