hugo_chavez__3_ Sep 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to the preliminary results released on Monday by the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, President Hugo Chavez’s party has maintained control of the Venezuelan Congress.

The results show that Chavez’s supporters won at least 96 of the total 165 seats in the country’s Congress. The election was held on Sunday and the opposition party pulled at least 61 seats from the total. Six seats have not yet been declared and a splinter socialist party in the country called the PPT had two seats.

The opposition party called the Democratic Union Table coalition pulled a strong performance in the recent national elections in the country.

If the provisional results coming in are confirmed, President Hugo Chavez will be without his absolute majority in the country’s Congress. The president has enjoyed two-thirds congressional majority for some years now and analyst believe the president’s support is going down. Many Venezuelans are blaming the country’s president for increased in crime and shortage of vital amenities including food and electricity.

The opposition and the ruling parties expressed mixed reactions to the provisional results. The opposition party says the result means the government will have to negotiate with the opposition on key issues.
