Chavan warns Sena, MNS against anti-north Indian campaign
February 1st, 2010 - 8:44 pm ICT by IANSBangalore, Feb 1 (IANS) Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Monday came down heavily upon the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), warning them of action if they pursue their attacks on north Indians in Mumbai.
“We will not sit quiet, we will show by our action,” Chavan told reporters here.
Pointing out that the ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ slogan by the MNS and the Shiv Sena is for political gains, Chavan said: “We will not allow these things to happen. Anyone can live anywhere in India. The constitution guarantees this.”
The chief minister asserted that if the MNS and the Sena took law into their hands, “we will take stringent action against them”.
On the dispute over Belgaum, Chavan said Maharashtra would go by the Supreme Court verdict on it.
Maharashtra has filed a petition in the Supreme Court claiming certain areas, including Belgaum, in Karnataka belong to the state on the basis of language spoken there.
Karnataka disputes the claim on the ground that the issue has been resolved on the basis of Mahajan Commission recommendation. The panel, headed by third Chief Justice of India, Mehr Chand Mahajan, had ruled in 1967 that Belgaum, where a large number of people speak Marathi, remain in Karnataka.
Chavan urged the Karnataka government to safeguard the interests of Marathi speaking people in Belgaum.
