Mumbai, March 3 (IANS) Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray Thursday met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to discuss issues arising out of the state government’s move to go ahead with the 9,900MW Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) coming up in Ratnagiri district.
Among other things, Thackeray is understood to have discussed the problems of rehabilitation of the local population who would be displaced by JNPP, the safety and environmental aspects, here late Thursday evening.
JNPP is facing strong resistance from the locals as well as a majority of the opposition parties, including Shiv Sena.
While Chavan was greeted with protests and interruptions at his public rally in Jaitapur last week, this week the government retaliated by making arrests of key local persons opposing JNPP.
Thackeray has been planning to visit Jaitapur and surrounding areas, especially since it has become a political issue with Industry Minister Narayan Rane - a former Shiv Sena leader and ex-chief minister - vowing to ensure that JNPP goes through.
During his meeting with Chavan at ‘Varsha’ the chief minister’s official residence, Thackeray was accompanied by senior party leaders like Subhash Desai, Diwakar Raote, Datta Nalawade and others.
