Chautala wins two seats, defeats Haryana finance minister (Lead)
October 22nd, 2009 - 3:21 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Oct 22 (IANS) Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala Thursday won both assembly seats he contested from — Uchana Kalan, where he narrowly defeated Finance Minister Birender Singh, and Ellenabad.
Chautala pulled off a tough win Thursday when he defeated Birender Singh of the Congress in the Uchana Kalan assembly seat in Jind.
Chautala defeated Birender Singh by a margin of just 621 votes on this seat in what is perhaps the biggest contest among all 90 assembly seats in the state.
Birender Singh, a powerful Jat community leader from Jind district, was aspiring to be chief minister if the Congress returned to power.
Chautala won the Ellenabad seat in Sirsa district by over 16,400 votes, defeating his Congress rival.
