Chariot festival hits communist rally in Bengal
July 7th, 2011 - 7:20 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, July 7 (IANS) The communists may be atheists, but the Hindu festival of Rath Yatra Thursday forced West Bengal’s main opposition Left Front to revise the dates of an ongoing protest against rising prices.
The Rath Yatra, which marks the visit of Lord Jagannath and his siblings to their aunt’s place and their return home after eight days astride three chariots, has fallen on July 3 and July 10.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose, who had earlier announced the agitation against inflation and fuel price hikes from July 4-11, said: “There was some lacuna in our decision. Our district leaderships have contacted us. We have told them that they can stretch the programmes even to July 13 or July 14.”
The protests include campaign across the state and sit-ins before central government offices.
