New Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS) Former Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organizing Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi’s officer on special duty Shekhar Deorukhar was apprehended Friday by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Pune, officials said.”He was arrested this (Friday) afternoon from Pune and would be taken to a CBI special court. We will bring him to Delhi by tomorrow (Saturday) on transit remand,” CBI Deputy Inspector General Vinita Thakur told IANS.

CWG, the sporting extravaganza held in the national capital Oct 3-14, 2010 was marred by allegations of massive financial irregularities and corruption.

The CBI questioned Kalmadi Jan 5 and carried out searches at his premises in Delhi, Pune and Mumbai.

Three close aides of Kalmadi - T.S. Darbari, the joint director general (revenue, marketing and chairman secretariat) in the OC and Sanjay Mahendroo, the deputy director general (marketing) - were arrested Nov 15, 2010, while M. Jayachandran, joint director (finance), was arrested Nov 21.

The court granted bail to Darbari Jan 14 and to Mahendroo Jan 15 while Jayachandran was released Jan 19 because the investigative agency failed to file a chargesheet against them within the stipulated 60 days.

The CBI has so far filed three complaints of alleged irregularities in the CWG preparations. Two FIRs are about the contract to AM Films, a firm in London, for the Queen’s Baton Relay function. The third is related to Rs.107 crore spent on overlays at the CWG Village and other Games venues.

The government sacked Kalmadi and OC secretary general Lalit Bhanot Jan 24 from their posts following the allegations.
