Cauvery River Authority to meet Wednesday after 9 years
September 18th, 2012 - 10:20 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) The Cauvery River Authority (CRA) will meet after nine years Wednesday following the demand of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for a meeting over the state’s demands for release of water from the river.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh heads the CRA and the meeting will be attended by chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry and Kerala.
Official sources said Jayalalithaa had written to the central government in May seeking a meeting of CRA. The state had demanded release of water from Cauvery river to save its standing crops. The last meeting of CRA was held in 2003 during the rule of National Democratic Alliance.
The Supreme Court had earlier this month expressed its displeasure over the Prime Minister’s Office not fixing a date for meeting of CRA.
Tamil Nadu had made a plea to the apex court for a direction to the central government for convening CRA meeting to approve “distress-sharing formula” evolved by Cauvery Monitoring Committee for sharing of flows of the river in view of “distress situation” in the state.
Karnataka has indicated that it would demand a new formula to share Cauvery water with Tamil Nadu and other states when monsoon fails.
