London, Dec 18 (DPA) French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Thursday won a legal battle against a clothing company that used her nude images on a line of shopping bags, media reports said.A court in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis ruled that the clothing company Pardon must pay the First Lady 40,000 euros ($58,400) in damages for using her nude image without authorization that caused her “moral and patrimonial damage”, the Daily Mirror reported.
The pictures used on the bags were taken in 1993, dating back to the days when the 40-year-old glamorous wife of President Nicolas Sarkozy was a model.
Bruni had sued the company saying the use of her naked picture was theft of her image and demanded 125,000 euros in damages. She had also announced that the money would be donated to a charity.
The court also prohibited Pardon from selling or otherwise distributing the bag and ordered to pay another 3,000 euros as court fees.
However, Peter Mertes, the head of Pardon, said he would appeal against the judgment.
Earlier, the company had justified the use of Bruni’s naked images saying that she was “a public woman”.
