The tax on carbonated beverages will be applied in July, as it has been reported. Today the state senate is likely to give its nod to the bill for tax hike. The $667 million package is slated to be passed by Senate Democrats. Apart from candy and beer, new taxes will be slapped on real estate agents, accountants and lawyers. Since the House approved the new legislation on Saturday it will be sent to Governor Chris Gregoire. If the state is keen on collecting the tax revenues then she would have to sign up the bill by this week.

The new tax scheme is expected to address the $2.8 billion budget deficit. None from the Republicans cast their vote for the bill in the House Saturday. Ed Murray, the Seattle based Democrat senator said that no one can say that the ruling party was in a rush to get the bill cleared. However, some of the democrats who voted for the bill admitted that some parts in the bill were against their liking. One of them was Ross Hunter, the Finance Committee Chairman. The republicans said that tax hikes are not going to help in the long run.

It is being estimated that the bill will raise close to $668 million till June 2011. However, the taxes slapped on soda and beer will not be made permanent. It will end in 2013. A separate bill is being readied on a hike in tobacco tax. It will come up later in the House and Senate.
