Campaigning ends peacefully in Srinagar

Bharatiya Janata Party Srinagar, May 5 (IANS) Campaigning for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency that goes to the polls Thursday in the staggered Lok Sabha elections ended peacefully Tuesday.
“The campaigning came to an end and no untoward incident happened during the campaign process,” an election official said.

Over 1.1 million voters will decide the fate of 15 contestants spread over 15 assembly segments of this parliamentary constituency.

The main contest is between the ruling National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah and Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, a prominent Shia leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Five independents are also in the fray.

Two women contestants, Khalida Shah of the Awami National Conference and Mehbooba Shadab, an independent are also seeking election to the Lok Sabha.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party have also put up their candidates.

The election commission has appointed three observers and 913 micro observers to ensure free, fair and transparent polls in the border state.
