Campaigning ends for Chhattisgarh by-poll

Raipur, May 6 (IANS) Campaigning ended Friday in Chhattisgarh’s insurgency-hit Bastar Lok Sabha constituency where a by-poll will be held Sunday, officials said.
There are eight candidates in the fray but the main contest is between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. The state’s ruling BJP has won from Bastar for the past four times, twice before when Chhattisgarh was a part of Madhya Pradesh.
The by-poll has been necessitated due to death of BJP’s tribal leader Baliram Kashyap in March.
The BJP has fielded Kashyap’s son Dinesh Kashyap while the Congress has bet on Kawasi Lakhma, the legislator from Konta, which is one of the eight assembly segments that make up the Bastar parliamentary constituency.
Polling will take place in 1,716 polling booths amid tight security arrangements, election officials said.
