LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is accused of employing a housekeeper, who was an illegal alien, for nine years and then fired her when she decided to run for Governor, local media reported on Wednesday.

According to Los Angeles Times, the former Whitman’s maid and housekeeper alleged that she was exploited, disrespected and emotionally and financially abused during the nine years she worked for the GOP candidate.

Whitman said through a statement that she fired her when the employee said in 2009 that she was in the country illegally and used false documents to gain employment. Whitman’s campaign office said she was saddened as the maid was close to the family.

In contrast, the housekeeper said that the gubernatorial candidate knew she was in the U.S. illegally but did not act on it until she decided to run for governor last year. She claimed unlawful pregnancy discrimination, and asserted that Whitman failed to pay her for all the hours she worked.

The worker’s attorney, Gloria Allred, said that her client will file a claim for unpaid wages and mileage reimbursement.

The accusation came as Whitman is trying to earn the vote of the Latino community, including politicians and organizers. Whitman was also recognized as a supporter of the Latin people due to her pledge for job creation.
