CAG is not only the government’s accountant: BJP
August 11th, 2011 - 6:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 11 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Thursday slammed the Congress’s contention that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) was there only to audit government expenditures, saying it was the Congress’s habit to attack anyone who exposed their shortcomings.
Parliamentary Accounts Committee chairman and senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said the CAG is authorised to audit the expenditure, compliance and performance of the government and it is not only a chartered accountant.
“CAG is not only a chartered accountant, it is authorised for the performance audit to bring out the shortcomings of the government,” he said, charging them with attacking all the institutions and people who where disclosing their shortcomings.
“Whether it is Baba Ramdev, or Anna Hazare or CAG, the government is attacking all of them. They have a problem with transparency and accountability,” he said.
He also criticised Congress MP and party spokesperson Manish Tiwari for saying that the CAG report is all about pips, leaks and squeaks.
“The government doesn’t want its corruption to come in open. If government is not accountable it becomes a dictator,” he added.
