New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) The cabinet Tuesday urged political parties and people in Andhra Pradesh to maintain peace following days of violence and regional discord over the proposed formation of Telangana state.
A statement issued after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs said: “The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs took stock of the situation in Andhra Pradesh and appeals to the people and all political parties in Andhra Pradesh to maintain peace and harmony.”
The statement made no reference to the proposed formation of Telangana, a state to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh by slicing 10 of its districts, including Hyderabad.
The appeal came on a day when Congress MPs from Andhra Pradesh clashed openly in the Lok Sabha over Telangana, much to the embarrassment of the ruling party and its allies.
The meeting was held at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
