Bus services on Maharashtra-Karnataka border to remain suspended
July 15th, 2010 - 10:16 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, July 15 (IANS) Three days after a bus was burnt and some others stoned in Karnataka, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) said Thursday its bus service to the neighbouring state would remain suspended indefinitely till a go-ahead from police.
“We will have to keep the bus services suspended until peace prevails on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border,” said an MSRTC spokesperson.
The MSRTC Monday had suspended all bus services to Karnataka for 48 hours following attacks on at least four of its vehicles during the day.
“Both, Karnataka and Maharashtra police authorities are on constant watch on the border. People are still not at peace and agitations might flare up any moment,” the spokesperson said.
“The police have, therefore, not given a go ahead on starting bus services to and from Karnataka,” he added.
The move was prompted Monday by the burning of a Hubli-Mumbai bus and stone pelting on three other buses in various areas allegedly by some miscreants owing allegiance to the anti-Marathi lobby in Karnataka.
As many as 330 buses from Maharashtra ply to various parts of Karnataka everyday. Around 85 Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses come to various parts of Maharashtra.
