Buddhadeb, Mamata cast votes in city booths

Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) Rival leaders West Bengal Chief Minister and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee cast their respective votes in city booths Wednesday as the state witnessed the third phase of polling in assembly elections.
While Bhattacharjee cast his vote with wife Mira and daughter Suchetana at Patha Bhavan school in the city at about 3 p.m., Banerjee exercised her franchise at Mitra Institution School in South Kolkata at about 4:50 p.m., a few minutes before voting ended.
The chief minister takes on former state chief secretary Manish Gupta in Jadavpore constituency. Bhattacharjee has won five times consecutively with huge margins since 1987. Communists have never lost in Jadavpore.
Polling in the third phase was held in 75 constituencies of three districts - Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas.
A total of 14,419,669 people were eligible to elect their representatives from among 479 contestants.
