Lucknow, Jan 13 (IANS) The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) made a clean sweep in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council polls, winning 31 of the 33 seats, counting for which was held Wednesday.
While the Election Commission is yet to declare the results officially, according to sources in the State Election Commission, of the 33 seats for which counting was held, the BSP won 31, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) could get only one seat each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could not even open its account.
The lone seat that went to the Congress was Rae Bareli, while the SP could register its victory only on the Pratapgarh constituency.
Polling for the Uttar Pradesh legislative council to elect 36 representatives from 35 local authority constituencies took place Jan 7 with around 90 percent of the electorate exercising their franchise.
Of the 36 seats, the results for 33 seats were declared Wednesday, while those of the other three seats - Aligarh, Meerut-Ghaziabad, Bulandshar - will be announced Thursday as re-polling was held Wednesday following some complaints with the Election Commission.
The Uttar Pradesh legislative council (Vidhan Parishad) has 100 members. Of these, 36 are elected by the local bodies. Other members are elected by graduates, teachers and legislators of the lower house, while some members are nominated.
