Lucknow, Oct 12 (IANS) A legislator of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and his 10 supporters were booked for violence during panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district Tuesday, police said.
A case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Ghura Ram, who represents the Rasda assembly seat in Ballia, some 300 km from Lucknow.
According to police, Ram along with his supporters Monday assaulted Karnesh Singh in Garwarh town while the polling was underway.
Singh, who was contesting for the post of head of Alampur village council in Ballia, alleged that owing to political rivalry, Ram and his supporters were pressurising voters not to cast their votes in his favour. Later, when Singh objected to Ram’s move, he along with his supporters assaulted him.
“An enquiry has been initiated in the case. Once the enquiry is over, we would take necessary action,” Superintendent of Police V.K. Shekhar told reporters, declining to comment further.
