BSP government interfering in police’s work: BJP

Lucknow, June 17 (IANS) Accusing Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of providing “political patronage” to policemen, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said there would be no need of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or any other agency in the state if the Mayawati government stops its interference.
“Uttar Pradesh Police used to be quite efficient in the past, but today their performance has declined considerably owing to the state government intervention in their activities,” BJP vice-president Vinay Katiyar said at a press conference here.
“The state government is affecting the functioning of the police by adopting several corrupt practices… From accepting bribe for transfer and postings to providing shelter to erring cops and acting against the honest officials, the state government is doing it all,” he alleged.
“I am quite confident that if the BSP government allows the police to work indepedently, we would not need CBI or other investigating agencies to work on cases in Uttar Pradesh,”he added.
Referring to the brutal murder of the teenaged girl, who was found dead in premises of a police station in Lakhimpur district and a custodial death in Barabanki district, Katiyar said both cases have exposed the “inhumane face” of the police whic has failed to take strict action against those involved in the incidents.
