Ghaziabad, July 7 (IANS) Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and others engaged in protests as counting in the municipal polls in Ghaziabad was underway Saturday to protest the ruling Samjwadi Party “influencing” the results in its favour.
BJP workers sat on a ‘dharna’ while the counting was on. According to the party, the counting for the first three rounds was done in their absence. The party had claimed a massive lead in those rounds.
The agitating workers was pacified after the district magistrate and police chief reached the spot.
Protests also erupted during the counting of Ward No. 27 in which the candidates of various parties opposed the declaration of Samajwadi Party candidate Billoo Yadav as the winner.
According to the agitating candidates, they were not allowed to enter the counting arena by the officials. By the time, they were allowed to gain entry, Yadav was announced as the winner. They demanded a recount.
Counting was still on for the seat of mayor with BJP’s Telu Ram Kamboj in a close fight with Samajwadi Party-supported Sudan Rawat.
