BJP to meet Uttar Pradesh governor in Varun Gandhi case

Lucknow, March 30 (IANS) A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation will Monday evening meet Uttar Pradesh Governor T.V. Rajeswar, seeking his intervention into the case against party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi, who was booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) Sunday night.
“Our delegation will apprise the governor about the autocratic ways adopted by the Mayawati government for slapping the NSA against Varun,” BJP state unit spokesperson H.N. Dixit told reporters here.
Dixit alleged that the Mayawati government was misusing the law to falsely implicate the party’s nominee from Pilibhit during the April-May Lok Sabha polls. He added that the state government had taken action against Varun Gandhi just to appease the minority community.
The Mayawati government late Sunday invoked the NSA against Varun Gandhi for his reported hate speeches and mob violence during his arrest Saturday.
“In view of the highly provocative and communally charged speeches delivered by him at two places followed by organised violence by his supporters, the district magistrate of Pilibhit has clamped NSA on Varun Gandhi,” principal secretary (information) Vijay Shankar Pandey said at a press conference here Sunday night.
“Varun Gandhi compounded his unlawful acts by disturbing public order through his inflammatory speeches outside the local court March 28 as also by giving a free hand to his supporters to indulge in acts of aggression,” Pandey added.
