Gandhinagar, Oct 12 (IANS) Early trends in counting of votes for six municipal corporations in Gujarat Tuesday indicated a possible Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sweep, sources at the election office said.
Though the results were yet to be declared officially, four of the six corporations - Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Rajkot and Vadodara - are believed to be comfortably in the hands of the BJP, the sources said.
The outcome, so far, in the remaining two corporations - Ahmedabad and Surat - also seems to be favouring the party.
In Ahmedabad, results for over 100 seats of the total 192 have come in with the BJP accounting for 84 and the Congress 21.
In Surat, of the total 114 seats the verdict is out for about 75 seats with 65 going to the BJP and six to the Congress. Four seats have gone to other parties, sources said.
In Vadodara, 60 of a total of 75 seats have gone to the BJP and seven to the Congress, with counting still continuing in the remaining seats, sources said.
In Rajkot, out of a total 69 seats 43 have gone to the BJP and eight to the Congress so far, they said.
Jamnagar has 57 seats. So far, the BJP has won 32 and the Congress 16, sources said.
Bhavnagar has 51 seats and out of these 41 have gone to the BJP and 10 to the Congress, they said.
