BJP ropes in Khurana for postponed Delhi seat election

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has entrusted party veteran Madan Lal Khurana to oversee the Dec 13 election for the Rajinder Nagar assembly constituency, expecting a win here to serve as a consolation prize for losing the Delhi assembly polls.Polling in the constituency was postponed after sitting legislator and BJP candidate Puran Chand Yogi committed suicide prior to the elections.
“We have requested Khuranaji to give time for the constituency. We expect to win and it will certainly be better for us,” BJP Delhi unit chief Harsh Vardhan told IANS.
“All our party workers are busy there and Khuranaji is also overseeing it,” he said adding, that it could be a “consolation prize”.
The BJP has put up Yogi’s widow Asha Yogi as its candidate.
There are 12 candidates in the fray for the seat but the main fight is expected to be among the BJP, the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party candidates.
Yogi will face Trilok Chand Sharma of BSP and Bhagwan Das of the Congress. However, the result will have little consequence for the BJP as the Congress has already bagged 42 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The BJP has managed only 23 seats.
Delhi chief electoral officer Satbir Silas Bedi said they have made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the polls Saturday.
“We have made all arrangements. Security is in place and we hope for a smooth poll Saturday,” Bedi told IANS.
The constituency, with an electorate of 120,000, will see voting starting at eight in the morning.
