BJP plans big road show for Varun’s ‘arrest’

Bharatiya Janata Party Lucknow, March 27 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned a grand road show Saturday morning when Varun Gandhi goes to Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh to court arrest for allegedly making hate speeches, party sources said.
Sources said that senior BJP leader Kalraj Misra has been sent to Pilibhit to mobilise crowds as the high command wishes to turn it into a “big event” that could propel this ‘other’ Gandhi scion into the big ‘Hindutva’ league.

“Varun would reach Bareilly in the (Saturday) morning and then drive down 58 km in a motorcade to Pilibhit,” a party spokesman said.

Varun, the BJP nominee from Pilibhit, Friday withdrew his bail application from the Delhi High Court and said he would court arrest. The Election Commission had asked for a criminal charge to be filed against Varun for his anti-Muslim speeches.

The BJP appears to be resorting to a strong Hindutva line for its revival in the state where it was reduced to a paltry 10 out of the 80 seats at the last parliamentary elections.

Asked what would the BJP do if the police did not take Varun into custody, a top state party leader said, “The kind of crowd that is converging for Varun’s show in Pilibhit tomorrow will be enough to provoke the cops to arrest him.”

While Varun would be staging his arrest in Pilibhit, BJP’s prime ministerial nominee L.K. Advani would be addressing his first public rally in the state at Maharajganj - where the party’s saffron-clad Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath holds sway.
