New Delhi, April 21 (IANS) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including party president Nitin Gadkari, L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley were arrested Wednesday during the party’s march to parliament to protest price rise. They were immediately released.
The BJP leaders were slowly moving in an open truck towards Parliament House along with thousands of party workers after an anti-price rice rally at the Ramlila Maidan in old Delhi area.
They were stopped by the police about 3 km from parliament.
BJP leaders said that police had agreed to allow 10,000 party workers to move towards Parliament House.
“They told us it will not be possible to allow such a large number of people to march to parliament,” a senior BJP leader told IANS.
“Police announced arrest of BJP leaders and then released them simultaneously,” he said.
However, the party went ahead with its demonstration at Jantar Mantar, the 18th century observatory on the edge of New Delhi’s posh shopping district of Connaught Place.
