BJP, JD-U to meet on presidential candidate

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were set to meet their Janata Dal-United (JD-U) counterparts Wednesday, a day after the allies differed over the presidential candidate, sources said.
The JD-U had Tuesday refused to endorse the BJP’s views on the presidential candidates.
The JD-U is reportedly upset by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj’s comment that Vice President Hamid Ansari does not have the “stature” to be president. JD-U leader Sharad Yadav distanced himself from the comment, saying it was the BJP’s view and not of the alliance.
President Pratibha Patil’s term ends in the third week of July.
The UPA has over 40 percent of the total votes in the electoral college while the NDA has less than 30 percent. Neither grouping can elect a presidential candidate on its own electoral strength.
