New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) Crisis managers of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday swung into action to placate Gopinath Munde, who resigned as general secretary citing alleged lack of democracy within the party. BJP sources said the party leaders like Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi got in touch with Munde immediately after the news of his putting in papers from all party posts reached here.

“The efforts are on to persuade him to reconsider his decision. It is any way the prerogative of party chief Rajnath Singh whether to accept the resignation or not. We hope Munde will certainly reconsider his decision,” a BJP source said.

Munde has been sulking ever since his brother-in-law and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan died May 3, 2006, 12 days after his younger brother Praveen Mahajan shot him at his residence in Mumbai.

Party vice-president Naqvi said no official resignation letter had yet been received from Munde. “The party has not yet got his resignation letter,” he said.

Munde wanted Rekha Mahajan, wife of Pramod Mahajan, to be nominated for the Rajya Sabha, but the party had preferred spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.

The Maharashtra leader was also unhappy over legislative committee member Madhu Chavan’s appointment as the party’s Mumbai unit chief.

Rajnath Singh had inducted Munde as a general secretary in his team Jan 29, 2007. Munde, known for his organisational skills, was the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra during the BJP-Shiv Sena rule.

The party sources said that the Munde episode was just indicative of the intra-party bickering under the presidentship of Rajnath Singh.
