Bharatiya Janata Party Kolkata, April 5 (IANS) No big-size cut-outs, no festoons or political banners. Rahul Chakraborty, a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has chosen open-air drama to woo his voters in rural West Bengal.
Chakraborty, who is the party’s West Bengal secretary, is contesting the electionS from Uluberia constituency in Kolkata’s adjoining Howrah district.

“I’ve decided to choose open-air drama to reach out to my voters rather than political gatherings, slogans, wall graffiti etc. I think it’s the best medium for the rural population of West Bengal who are still very much familiar with this ancient culture,” Chakraborty told IANS.

“I want to create a cultural platform for our voters so that they can interact freely. Through this unique canvassing tool, I desire to give a good and healthy message to our young generation that politics is not at all a bad proposition. It’s partially bad for a section of our leadership that only work for mean interests.

“There should be a positive political ambience where we all can come and practise good things in our country,” he said.

Chakraborty, a civil engineer by profession, said there would be about seven dramas during his campaign in Uluberia - the seat that comprises seven different assembly constituencies in the district.

Asked if the performances will be political, he said: “No these dramas will be completely apolitical based on historic stories. But, of course, there will be a political address at the beginning of every show.

“I don’t know if people will vote for me or anyone else. It’s their choice and they can cast their votes according to their will. But I want to show a new path to them that campaigning does not mean sound pollution or visual pollution. Neither is it an event for political bloodshed.”

“I just want to show them the right way where our next generation can walk freely. So I’ve taken up this unique method,” Chakraborty said.
