BJP calls for Delhi shutdown Friday against price rise
November 12th, 2009 - 9:58 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 12 (IANS) The Bharatiaya Janata Party’s (BJP) Delhi unit has called for a city-wide shutdown Friday to protest the rising prices of essential items and hike in fares of buses and metro.
Senior party leaders Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Vijay Goel, Madan Lal Khurana and former Delhi BJP chief Harshvardhan, appearing together at a press conference, appealed to Delhiites to make the protest successful.
The leaders requested the traders, industrialists, parents, students, workers and workmen of unorganised sectors to support their agitation.
However, they said essential services and transport have been kept out of the purview of the agitation.
The BJP leaders alleged that the Delhi government has taken about half a dozen such anti-people decisions, including increasing school fees and the Metro and bus fares. Because of these, Delhiites are suffering from an economic burden.
They demanded a rollback of hiked bus and metro fares, inquiry into the bungling in sugar, strengthening of the public distribution system (PDS) and that the government should make all the essential consumer goods available through the PDS on cheap rates.
