Alabama, Mar 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Ex-Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford was sentenced to prison for fifteen years on Friday. Larry Langford was convicted for receiving bribes and was also charged $360,000, after being proved guilty on felony counts that amounted up to 60. It was established that the Birmingham mayor has received a bribe of nearly $240,000, promising profitable bond labor.
U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler gave out the final verdict for the case thus sentencing the Birmingham mayor for 15 years of prison for heavy bribes that comprised of luxury articles, costly garments and even Rolex watches that adds up to the total amount of $240,000. The prosecutors however had demanded 24 years of prison for the Birmingham Mayor. They were of the view that such a decision would definitely be a lesson not for Larry Langford but for many like him who would have been following the very same line of corruption without any shades of regret.
The defense attorney however had approached the bench with a petition of a lighter sentence of five year for the ex Birmingham Mayor which was summarily rejected by the court. Larry Langford was seen to apologize several times in front of the court after the verdict came out. He was immediately taken into custody and removed from his office, following the conviction.
Larry Langford and his wife, following the conviction, has been making vehement statements that racial discrimination had been in effect while the case had been in process, given the fact that all the members of the jury had been white. This statement has however, gained no grounds.
