Beauty is fine, but no contest: Rajnath SinghMarch 7th, 2008 - 9:49 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, March 7 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajnath Singh says since beauty is a gift of nature, it does not merit contests. Addressing a Virangana Sammelan organized by the BJP Mahila Morcha here on Friday on the eve of International Women’s Day, Singh recalled how as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh he had banned beauty contests there and suggested the same be done throughout India.
He said, “Beauty is a gift of nature. How can there be a contest?” he told the assembly of women foot soldiers of the party.
He declared contests should be held for only those qualities of women that they have acquired through human effort and not for something that has been gifted by God.
The BJP chief expressed concern over the growing craze for Western culture among Indian women.
“We should not try to follow Western culture. You are Indian women and this needs to be remembered,” he said.
