Jyoti Basu Kolkata, Jan 12 (IANS) Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu remained critical Tuesday even though his fever has subsided. He also underwent a fresh brain scan that showed no change in an old clot he had developed, doctors attending to him said.
While the fever that began Monday evening subsided, the 95-year-old had to be given a unit of blood to improve the haemoglobin count, said a medical bulletin issued by the AMRI Hospital here Tuesday night.

According to the hospital doctors, the blood transfusion was given as Basu’s haemoglobin count had dropped below nine. The ideal haemoglobin count for a person of his age should be 10 gm per decilitre of blood.

The scan was done to determine the status of the brain clot, which the former West Bengal chief minister developed after a fall in his bathroom in 2008, and his present neurological status.

“No fresh change has been found in the clot, which is a good sign. But his general condition still remains critical,” said Debasish Sharma, AMRI Hospital’s medical superintendent.

Sharma said the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader, who is on partial ventilator support in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU), was being administered blood pressure reducing medicines.

“Another unit of blood will be given tomorrow (Wednesday). We are not carrying out any dialysis as his kidneys are functioning in a proper way and the urine output also remains the same,” Sharma said.

Telugu superstar-turned politician Chiranjeevi was among those who called upon Basu at the hospital Tuesday.

The CPI-M veteran was hospitalised Jan 1 and put on ventilator support Jan 6.

Born 1914 in Kolkata, Basu became West Bengal chief minister in June 1977. He stepped down voluntarily on health grounds in November 2000.
