Bart Gordon Washington, Dec 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The historic 13-term congressman Rep. Bart Gordon from Tennessee, announced on Monday he will not seek re-election next year. He is the latest Democrat to announce his retirement.

The sixty-year-old Bart Gordon had won the re-election in 2008, with a whooping majority that contained 74% of the mandate. “Turning 60 has led me to do some thinking about what’s next,” he said in a statement. “I have an 8-year-old daughter and a wonderful wife who has a very demanding job, and I am the only child of my 83-year-old mother Margaret. They have made sacrifices to allow me to do what I love by serving Congress, and now it’s my turn.”

Bart Gordon debuted on the political arena in 1984, after Al Gore decided to run for the Senate and Bart got the chance to jump into the fray. Currently Bart is the chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology.

He thinks that the “America Competes Act,” which was passed and which called for increased spending on math and science programs is a great accomplishment in his career.

Gordon clarified that he is committed to reauthorizing both the America Competes Act and NASA in 2010.
