Bangladesh shifts officials after row with leaders
September 29th, 2010 - 1:44 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, Sep 29 (IANS) The government has shifted out senior officials of Bangladeshh’s Pabna district following violence as well as a prolonged stand-off between the administration and ruling Awami League (AL) leaders.
Media reports have said the AL leaders were “interfering” in recruitment tests being conducted by the administration, leading to clashes.
The three officials who were shifted are Deputy Commissioner (DC) A.F.M. Manjur Kadir, Superintendent of Police Jamil Ahmed and sub-district officer Abdul Halim.
The ministries of establishment and home separately decided “upon directives from government high-ups who were irked by the role of DC”, the newspaper said.
The government’s action came as police pressed charges against 33 activists of Awami League, Jubo League (youth front) and Chhatra League (student front) in connection with the attack on government officials and foiling a recruitment test in Pabna district.
Since the Awami League came to power in January lat year, Bangladesh has witnessed several incidents of the ruling party officials raiding government offices to block recruitment examinations, tenders for various projects.
Hasina’s aide H.T. Imam Tuesday said the youth and students organisations were not part of the Awami League and hence, the party and the government were not answerable.
Imam also said the Pabna incidents were “exaggerated” by the media.
