April 17th, 2011 - 2:55 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, April 17 (IANS) Bangladesh Sunday observed the formation of its provisional government when its elected leaders hoisted the flag for the first time.
Those elected from then East Pakistan in the November 1970 general election, gathered at Baidyanathtala, a mango grove at Meherpur in western region.
The place was later named Mujibnagar after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Rahman was named the first president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Syed Nazrul Islam was appointed the acting president in his absence, Star Online reported.
Tajuddin Ahmed was appointed as the first prime minister, while Khondoker Moshtaq Ahmed, Captain Muhammad Mansur Ali and A.H.M. Qamaruzzaman were the cabinet members.
Mujibur Rahman and most of his family were assassinated in a military-led coup in August 1975, while in November that year, Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Qamaruzzaman and Mansoor Ali were killed in Dhaka jail.
